Learn Kanji: Pen-Enabled privacy policy
Last updated: 2 November 2026
Learn Kanji: Pen-Enabled is a kanji writing practice app for Windows and for your browser. It does not collect, store, transmit or share personal information.
- Your writing, progress and settings are stored only on your device, in the app's own data folder.
- The app has no accounts, analytics, advertising or tracking, and it does not need an internet connection for its lessons.
- Basic 1 needs no purchase. If you buy Learn Kanji Full (a subscription or a one-time purchase), the Microsoft Store handles the purchase and any renewals, and tells the app which plan your Microsoft account has and until when. The app does not receive your payment details. You manage and cancel subscriptions in your Microsoft account. Microsoft's privacy statement applies to the Store: privacy.microsoft.com.
- When you tap a speaker button, Windows reads the word aloud with a voice installed on your device.
- Backups you save are files on your own device. The app does not upload them.
- Invite and thank-you codes for friends are made on your device from a random number. They contain no personal information, and the app never sends them anywhere: you share them yourself if you want to.
- For troubleshooting, the app keeps a short technical log (start-up and Store messages, no personal information) in its data folder on your device. It is never sent anywhere.
Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored.
In your browser
The web edition of Learn Kanji (learnkanji.app/app) follows the same rules, with these differences:
- Your writing, progress and settings are stored only in your browser's storage on your device. Clearing the site's data, or removing the installed app, removes them.
- If you buy Learn Kanji Full there, Gumroad handles the payment, any renewals and your receipt, and Gumroad's privacy policy applies to that: gumroad.com/privacy. The app never receives your payment details.
- When you enter a license key, the app sends the key to Gumroad's license service to check it, and checks it again now and then while you are online. Only the key and the product it belongs to are sent; the app keeps only the plan and its dates, on your device.
- When you tap a speaker button, your device's built-in speech feature reads the word aloud. Some voices provided by the browser or operating system may use an online service; the app does not control or receive that data.
- If you used the earlier web version at maximsf08.github.io/learn-kanji, that address can bring your progress to the web edition in the same browser. It passes the progress in the part of the link after the "#", which browsers do not send to any server, and the web edition asks before it takes it in.
